SQL Server 2008 Database Restore

  • Hi all

I am using Sql server 2008 Express Edition with Advanced Services.

When i restore my database by backup file of size 900 mb then i got this error.

    D:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA

TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio

    ------------------------------

Restore failed for Server '01HW202813\sqlexpress'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.SmoExtended)

    For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&ProdVer=10.0.1600.22+((SQL_PreRelease).080709-1414+)&EvtSrc=Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.ExceptionTemplates.FailedOperationExceptionText&EvtID=Restore+Server&LinkId=20476

    ------------------------------

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: CREATE DATABASE or ALTER DATABASE failed because the resulting cumulative database size would exceed your licensed limit of 4096 MB per database. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)

    For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&ProdVer=10.0.1600.22+((SQL_PreRelease).080709-1414+)&LinkId=20476

    ------------------------------

    BUTTONS:

    OK

    ------------------------------

    What is this?

  • While the backup file is only 900MB, the original database was larger than 4GB, and Express is limited to a 4 GB data file.

  • Then,How we will restore this?

  • Restore onto a non-express instance, shrink the data file, backup then restore on SQLExpress. (I don't recommend shrinking the source database due to the side effects of shrink)
