SQL Server 2005 versus Upgrade to SAP BW from ECC 5.0 R/3

  • We have been using SAP for about 10 years and have spent millions to each time we upgrade. Currently, we are on SAP version ECC 5.0, but we have not implemented BW. Reporting has always been an issue from SAP, but we are looking at going to SAP BI, which includes implementing BW and using the BEX suite in SAP... This will no doubtedly cost millions to do. I understand it is difficult enough to bring SAP R/3 data into BW, and very, very difficult to bring in non-SAP data into BW. We have been playing with SSIS and bring data into SQL Server 2005 and making "SAP" datamarts and using Reporting Services with some success. I need to present my case that this is a better route than going SAP BW\BI, but I need someone in a SAP shop that has done the SQL Server route. We have a SQL team of 3, versus a SAP team (who have all drank the SAP KoolAid) of 9 members. If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Craig B.

  • Craig, this is an interesting discussion, though I am leaning toward SAP BW since some of the native security and properties seem to be inherited by BW and it seems it could put more of the power in the users hands (eventually). Also, the SAP BW extracts are much cleaner than what I have seen written in ABAP.

Have you done any more research on the topic? How does SQL handle the extraction process? What % of your company is on SAP ECC 5.0?
