Attempting to install SQL Server 2005 Standard on Windows Server 2003. This is not an upgrade. This is being installed to a fresh installation of Windows Server 2003 R2 Service Pack 2.
The contents of the installation DVD were copied to a folder on the system. The folder structure is exactly as it should be, there can be issues when copying the files like this, it works as long as the Server and Tools folders are in the same directory structure, and they are.
When I attempt to run the installation (by double clicking on the splash.hta file). I am presented with the installation dialog. If I click on Install Server Components I immediately get an error.
SQL Server setup unexpectedly failed. For more information, review the summary setup log file, etc etc.
I review the setup log and this is what sticks out to me:
Error: Action "ComponentUpdateAction" threw an exception during execution. Error information reported during run:

It looks like it's looking for an update. This is the full installation, not an upgrade DVD. SQL Server was never installed on this box. I am stumped on how to proceed from here.

I am having the very same issue, but i think its because i had previous versions installed and they were uninstalled incorrectly. I will update when i find a solution... (i also have a hunch that the install disc i was given could be a problem)

never did, went with a different variation of the installation media

Hi, i had the same problem. Now the install. process works fine. I´ve deleted all registry entries named >sqlserver< and also deleted the c:\program files\mssqlserver folder structure.
Please test at your install.
