Hi,
Newbie here so if I'm posting in the wrong area please let me know.
We currently operate on Sql Server 2000. My company has purchased SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition and installed it on a new server. The installation was via download, not CD.
I currently use Query Analyzer to develop sql scripts from a remote location and occassionally I use SQL Enterprise Manager. From my research I believe that I will need to use SQL Server Managment Studio (SSMS) in order to have the type of functionality I have now.
What I haven't been able to determine is what components do I need to install on my machine (client) in order to make this happen? I've read that SSMS is included with SQL Server 2005 edition but I don't understand how I access or install it. Also, I've read that Visual Studio and/or .NET framework also need to be in place on the client machine?
Obviously, I'm lost. Any thoughts or direction would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for any input!

When you run the install you will see the option for client tools only. It takes care of the .NET stuff that you need and will install the Business Intelligence Development Studio as well.
The tools are quite a bit different between 2000 and 2005 so, definitely good that you are making the leap. Some great changes, some things a bit painful getting used to. The 2008 tools have been enhanced even more so, once you get the opportunity to install those do it. They are totally backward compatible (as far as I know) and the enhancements are nice.
Enjoy.

Thank you for the prompt response. A couple of questions. I did not participate in the installation of SQL Server 2005 on the new server and I am physcially hours from the office where it resides. I am connected to our network through VPN.
I was informed that the install was from a download, not a cd. Do I need to get hold of the download executable file and run it at my client machine in order to install the SSMS? If so, would I only install the Client Tools and nothing else?
Many thanks!

Yes. The installation program will load (or should) anything you need prior to installing the work station components. That is all you need to select when it gets to that point.
As an aside, you may want to consider spending the $50 (or so) and purchasing SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition for yourself. You can install the Developer Edition on your system at home, and have access to everything (and then some since your office has the Standard Edition). It is a great investment and opportunity to learn as much as possible about SQL Server 2005.

Thanks for the good information. I saw a downloadable TRIAL version of the SQL Server Developer 2005. Good for 180 days. I think I'll try that.
And after I install it I should be able to connect to the remote database rather than have a database copy on my client machine?
Thanks for to you both for setting me on the right path - it is greatly appreciated!
