SQL Server 2005 Management Studio Question

  • I am having the same problem on 2 different servers where I did not configure the server nor did I install SQL Server 2005. When I launch SQL Server Management Studio on these 2 servers I get the following message:

<Access to the registry key 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Shell' is denied>.

Then I get an the following message:

    Cannot connect.

A connection was succesfully established with the server, but an error occurred during the login process (No process is on the other end of the pipe).

I am in the local admin group on both of these servers.  I've serached the web but I can't find an answer.

    Thanks

    Roy

  • Never had this problem before but I had something just like it with SharePoint. You may be able to get around the problem by adjusting the permissions on that registry key. even though you are logged as an admin the security rights may be scrambled or whoever set it up locked it down to only their login.

Make sure you backup your registry before editing it though.

  • Thanks Bob.  I'll give it a try.
