Hello,
I am testing our research servers here to install SP3 for SQL Server 2005. I have a server with many SQL 2005 applications installed on it (SSRS/SSAS/SSIS) They are all named instances (previous install many moons ago).
When installing SP3 it has managed to upgrade all of the apps successfully with no issues. However there is also a copy of SQL 2005 Express running on the server also and this failed to upgrade. When running the SP3 feature installer, it does not recognise a second database engine running, it only shows the other named instance applications. How would I upgrade the Express edition to SP3?
Anyone out there had this issue before?
Thanks

I would suggest that you remove, or at least turn off the services for Express. If you have SQL Server, you do not need to be wasting time on trying to keep Express up and running. And I sure would not be using Express for any production databases.

Hi,
thanks for the reply. I agree, this is definitely not a preferred production setup, however part of my remit is blanket installing SP3 onto our research boxes and see what the results are. My question was wondering why the SP3 installer could not even see SQL Express running, I will stop the named instance of the database engine off and see if it can see Express running then.
Cheers

Update 22/07/2010:
Yes, there's a separate SP3 for SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. Doh!
Think McFly! Think! 😛
