I have 2 pc's installed sql server 2000. I pc with windows 2000 (sp4) and other with windows xp professional (sp2). While trying connect remotely server registrations fails. the error says registration unsuccessful login failed or server does not exist. though my desnination server can be reaced from other computers in the network. can any body help me out?

Is the sql server service running?
Are the protocols enabled.
Also check whether the user has proper credentials on the sql.

service, user credial everything else seems ok, but does serveice pack have anything to do with it?
cos, i have service pack installed in one machice but not in other one.

not really... your problem is that you are not able to login to SQL instance. Probelm lies else where. check once again .

Check your client network utility and also see how other PCs are connected to this server, such as named instance and port number. Keep trying.
