I just started with a new company that is using sql server with service pack 2. I am having a difficult time identifying what service pack 3 is supposed to fix. Does anybody have any specific information about why it would be important to upgrade from sp 2 to either sp3 or sp4?
It appears that sp4 could cause some problems with existing asp applications if the connection strings are not set up correctly??
I was going to post this in the service pack section, but it is empty

The biggest thing it fixes is the security hole that Slammer worm took advantage of. Without SP3a or higher, your SQL Server is vulnerable to the Slammer worm.
This is a quote from Microsoft's website for SP3a:
"Download SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3a (SP3a), the latest and most comprehensive update to SQL Server 2000 that corrects vulnerabilities including the Slammer (W32.slammer) virus."

You should get to SP4 and the rollup ( 2187 ) that follows. SP4 has a few problems ( I'm told ) which the rollup fixes. To have a patch level of SP2 is dangerous. I've happily been running on sp4 + rollup for many months with many servers.
