    All was working perfectly fine.

Today in the SQL Server 2000 SP4 PC there was a a Windows Update waiting for Instalattion:

I have the Backup off all the databases that where running on it, but i prefer not to reinstall all SQL Server. ¿Is there a solution to these problem?

    Bye!

PD: Sorry for my poor English, im from Argentina!

  • The security update requires it to be installed with the 'sa' account for it to be successful. Once that is done, reboot the system and go to services and check if MSSQLSERVICE is running or not..ALSO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE RIGHTS TO START SQL SERVER

    Thanks!!

  • What are you seeing in the application log? Right click on my computer (on the server), manage, application log.... There should be some errors associated with the SQL Server process starting up.

If there is not anything clear that you can search out I would burn a call to MS. I know the cost is there to consider but, when you consider the downtime associated with trying to work through a bad install, the call will definitely be cheaper.

  • The call to MICROSOFT is FREE OF COST...under MS policy, SUPPORT for SECURITY UPDATES is at NO COST...make sure you let them know this, also make sure you installed it the right way as is said in the article ...Thanks!!

  • Yeah, I was thinking that since it was an install process that was failing but didn't want to get hopes up if it wasn't going to come to pass that way.

    Thanks for the correction!

  • Guess what my server admin tried installing it on our production env and the updates failed. When he brought it to my knowledge I researched on it to find out it would fail if not done under 'sa' account. It will take a month or two for us to find another maintenance window as it is a 24X7 and I don't have 2-3 hours to spend with Microsoft on it...all they say is, do this do that....I say is why make it trivial to begin with and then have us call you and spend so much time just because some installs fail......

Fabian, I think MS will fix it for you buddy..not to worry, as long as you have backups..but I hope this downtime doesn't make your manager furious..

    Thanks!!
