SQL Maintinece Plan Question

  • We have an SQL 2000 server install that has 20 databases on it. Right now we are running 3 maintience plans, one is a full back up, the other two are trans log back ups. My question is, is it better to have on job running all three of these with sepearate sub schedules? I am asking this because it seems our log files are not shrinking after the full nightly back up. Thanks. for the help

  • My question is are they getting bigger everyday? If they are about the same size every night, then you definately DON'T want to shrink them as they would just have to grow again the next day. That would have an impact on your system performance.

  • I have just been reading on that, They don't grow that big everyday, I think the way the application works is that users import alot of financial data about once a month and the log file gets really big. Once data is loaded the log file could be shrunk back to a normal size. I just found the difference between shrinking the file and truncating. Thanks for the reply.
