SQL mail hangs

Hi Gurus,
In one of my production servers where SQL mail is configured was working till now. But now if I go to supporting services and click on SQL mail and properties it hangs. Users reported that they were not able to send mails using xp_sendmails.. I wanted to investigate and tried to stop mail using xp_stopmail and again.. no joy.
Can anyone help!!! It's urgent.

what mail are you using. mapi client (outlook) or smtp (IIS).
if outlook have you opened outlook and tried sending a mail from their.

Usually when sql mail hangs, an error should come back, can you capture the error? Please give more details.
