All,
I am in the process of looking at solutions that will speed our SQL Server backup. Right now we are just using SQL Server Agent to backup the databases directly to tape. We are also looking at Veritas as an alternative to do this by putting the backups to a staging area and then pick it up on to tape.
I would like to know:
1. Can SQL Litespeed back up to tape and also what kind of performance improvements can I expect to see?
2. Are there any other things I can do to improve the speed of the tape backups?
Thanks and looking forward to your suggestions,
Raj

Hi Raj,
LiteSpeed can certainly resolve your backup issues. LiteSpeed now supports direct tape backup operations in the latest release. It offers the same performance, speed and compression relative to conventional backup/restore as it does with disk dump operations. Typical results users see with LiteSpeed are 75%-90% integrated compression and the backups are twice as fast or faster than any other backup method. Restore times are also generally much faster with LiteSpeed as well.

Raj,
We deploy the same scenario you are considering.
Use LiteSpeed to backup, robocopy to "backup array" (staging area) then write to tape via Veritas.
It's the best solution we've found so far for a reasonable cost and reduced downtime. THere is almost no affect to my users now because it runs faster I can schedule it for the least active time on the server. Took me almost a year to convice that LiteSpeed would help. It's worth every penny and does give the compression and speed DbAssociates boasts.
