SQL licensing question

  • Hi -

I have setup two nodes (node 1 and node 2) as active/passive clustered server, and installed two instances (instance 1 and instance 2) on node1.

For some reason, we have a need to run each instance on separate node (instance 1 running on node 1 and instance 2 running on node 2) by moving the service of one instance to the other node.

Would that violate the licensing issue since we are active/passive and that by doing so we turn into active/active, correct?

  • If you're moving instance 2 to run on the second node, you need to license the second node as well.

Thanks for your reply, that what the intension is but I guess due to licensing we might not do so.
