SQL EXPRESS to SQL 2000

  • Hello,

I have a little syupid question but I need some advice.

I run SBS 2003 Standard edition which comes with SQL EXPRESS. I am getting close to the 4GB limit and so I purchased an update to the Premium edition which has SQL Server 2000.

What is the best way to move the database I use in EXPRESS to the new one? I know that I should back up the Database of course but I wonder if I can simply stop the SQL EXPRESS SERVER and then install SQL 2000 without having to uninstall EXPRESS.

    Any advice?

  • SQL Express is based on SQL Server 2005. I know you can't take a backup from SQL Server 2005 and restore back to SQL Server 2000. So I don't believe you can do that with Express, either. You're probably going to have to bring the SQL Server 2000 server up and then use DTS/SSIS to copy over the database.

Since we are talking about SBS, you may want to shoot an email to Susan Bradley, an MVP on SBS. You can contact her on her site:
