sql 2k set up issues ????

  • I am NEW to learning sql server so please be kind. I am going to install sql 2k on my home computer (not '05, cheap employer, don't ask) Everything I read about installation refers to Win 2k & NT. Can sql server be installed and work with/within/whatever XP? If not, my 2 options are 1) install a duel boot with 2k 2) I have 2 physical hard drives so I can pull one out and put it in an old Aptivia from where it came and use that as my sever. What's the best option?

  • There's not a huge difference between Windows 2000 and XP, so you should be fine. The instructions should work nearly the same.

  • The only catch with XP is usually with the firewall. If everything you're doing is local to the server (you're not going to connect to the SQL Server install from another system), you should be fine. Otherwise, you'll have to open up the appropriate ports in your firewall (if you have it active). Here's a KB article that explains what you need to do if you've got the firewall up:
