It could be a few different things.

You may want to look at the SSRS service logs to see if you have any errors. The files are located at:

    \Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\<Report Server folder>\Reporting Services\LogFiles

    The files are named ReportServerService_<date_time>.log

Most of the time errors are located in those files. And what to do depends on what the error is.

You can also try using Internet Explorer, right click on it and select Run As Administrator. Run as administrator will respond differently than just being in the Administrators group. Those are two different things.

  • Yes....the first several lines when you were logging in. It looks like it generated a minidump. DId you see this line?
    Minidump location: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSRS13.PLATO\Reporting Services\Logfiles

Are there any dump files in there? Any with the .mdmp extension?
I cant remember if Reporting Services does additional files or not so look for any files that aren't the normal ReportServerService_<timestamp>.log
What else do you have running on the server? Do you have the SQL service with the catalog on their (ReportServer and ReportServerTempDB databases) ?

Check the Windows event logs too  for the time when you were logging in probably check times starting at at least 15:50.
The errors were at 15:56 but there could have been things going on before that.

Since  SSRS goes through http.sys and there is an http exception in there, you might also want to check the log for http.sys.
    Go to  this directory: C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\HTTPERR
And then check the last httperr<number>.log. Ignore the "HTTP/1.1 GET /favicon.ico - 404 - NotFound" as that isn't important or needed for SSRS.
There  may not be anything of importance there but it should probably be checked when you get a dump like that.

  • hi Sue

no other file types here - all .log
this is also the sql server with report server dbs etc
nothing of much interest in the event log either, and the http log is gathering nothing either!

just noticing the call to list children is false, what is this referring to?

i went back to basics, i think the person who originally installed sql made a bit of a mess of things, but an uninstall and a reinstall with new configs and all is working now!

    thanks for helping me regardless!

  • You're welcome, thanks for posting back.
Just so you know even if just for your curiosity, the call to ListChildren is one of the methods for the Web Service which goes through the SOAP API.
It's  just to list all of the items in the folder you are in. The false means it was non-recursive. You can see the different methods executed in the log.
The web service is what people use to access things in Reporting Services. It's used by Report Manager as well. Anything you do in Report Manager, you can do
    through the web service.
