SQL 2008 with SQL 2000

  • Hello everybody,

i’m tryng to install a SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition istance on a machine running Windows Server 2003 SP2, with a SQL Server 2000 SP4 Enterprise Edition instance on it.

At the end of the installation it shows an error message: sql server browser cannot start, and we can’t go on. Did anyone have the same problem?

    Thank you

  • I'm pretty sure that you cannot go from Sql Enterprise down to Sql Standard

  • You can have as many different instances on one box as you like. I myself, have just finished installing SQL 2000, SQL 2005 and SQL 2008 all on my laptop and one a server that are both running Server 2003. I just gave each one a different instance name. Have not had any issues when installing. You can however, have only one instance of SQL Reporting Service running. I chose to use SQL 2008 reporting service.

  • My workstation has sql 2000, 2005 and 2008 all installed. I have all services set to manual and start up which ever one I want. Generally you don't need the sql browser unless it's a cluster. Try assigning a domain account to it. or a local machine account during the setup. I only run the browser on my clusters.
