I have an Olap back file .abf created on sql server 2005.
I want to restore this file onto 2008 basic Edition.
Is there a way to restore an .abf file using sql 2008 basic edition tools?

Which edition of SQL 2008 do have? There's no basic edition. There's express (free), web, workgroup, standard, enterprise and developer.

Its the free trial version that includes BIDS.
If I look on help about on Management Studio I get:
Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Basic (expires in 59 days)10.0.1600.22 ((SQL_PreRelease).080709-1414 )
In this edition I can only connect to
1) Database Engine
2) SQL Server Compact..

From what I can determine, Basic Edition of Management Studio was a pre-release version for use with SQL 2008 Express Edition.
I seriously doubt you can make that do what you need. You're going to be better off with a current copy of Dev Edition.
