SQL 2005 and Windows 7

  • A question for DBA's and Net Admin's:

We've been using SQL 2005 at the company and they're getting ready to upgrade our pc's from Windows XP Pro to Windows 7 Enterprise. I know that a custom (clean) install will be required to move to windows 7, which will require my machine to have sql 2005 re-installed. My question is if SQL server 2005 developer can coexist with Windows 7 Ent.

While I'm at it, I've installed sql 2008 dev on my machine just yesterday, and will probably have to re-install it after move to windows 7 ent. Will sql 2008 Developer work on Windows 7 Enterprise?

    thx,

    John

I have been running SQL Server 2005/8 in Windows 7 for months but I also run VS2008 Team Suites. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate not Enterprise.

  • Haven't seen issues, but I'm W7 Ult as well.

  • I just ran the windows 7 upgrade advisor and it came back compatible with sql 2008.

Yes Windows 7 complains about compatibility with SQL Server 2005 because of BIDs which is VS2005 but it installs. If you need SSRS then the install may take longer because IIS7.5 must be configured correctly in IIS6 mode for SSRS to be enabled by the installer. Check the thread below make sure UAC is disabled and use the configuration in the link I posted in thread below. Post again if you still need help.
