SQL 2005 and GIS server

  • yes, post installation just creates the windows service and licences it before creating the objects, but under 9.2 the SDE is part of the application server suite, even under 9.1 you can still install SDE on a separate server and point the post installation to a database on a separate sql server. The point is you dont want any software other than sql server running on the box

  • With the new spatial data types included in SQL Server 2008, most of the functionality of ArcSDE is now redundant. It will be interesting to see whether ESRI embraces the changes, or sticks with its SDE engine.

    Hi SQL_Quest,

If only it were that simple... ESRI GIS software tends to be quite specialised and requires SQL to be configured in a certain way. Have you checked out the ESRI website? (see link below) You should find what your looking for there in terms of ArcGIS installation guides etc, if not give them a call.

    http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis

We are a large ESRI site but thankfully we have a dedicated GIS team who support and generally lookafter ArcGIS and other ESRI products. As for me I just look after the SQL side of things!

I Will try and help where I can but my knowledge of ArcGIS is somewhat limited... i'm not aware of any 'linked servers' in our configuration.

    Cheers,

    Mark

    Hi Mark,

I have just a simple question ... we are using ArcGIS server 9.2 enterprise edition... does this server have the ArcSDE service running in it? If yes, can I use ONLY the post installation setup for ArcSDE to install the geo databases and create sde schema in the sql server database. so that the clients can connect to the ArcGIS server and SQL server can be the RDBMS holding the geo databases.

What version you are using for ArcGIS server ? In sql server do u have dbo or SDE schema for the geodatabases ?

    Thanks,

    \\K

    Hi

we currently have 9.1 and 9.2 side by side as we are migrating data. ArcGIS 9.2 is now a fully incorporated system and combines ArcIMS and ArcSDE into one place. For 9.2 you still run a post installation and create the service, all the old 9.1 libraries are retained in the 9.2 system. There really is to much to detail on a forum topic, as Mark suggested you would be best to contact ESRI and get the configuration documentation so you follow the right track

thanks for the info..As far as I understand .. you have the ArcSDE service running in ArcGIS server. Now to connect to SQL server, you might have run the post installation setup from the ArcSDE CD and configure the service for SQL server and created the schema(sde) and the geo databases.. correct me if I am understand wrong !!

    Is your SQL server on 2005 SP2. Have u installed SP3 ?
