Sizing

  • Is there a good method to size up what size of a server you'd need for Analysis Services? I am working on a project that will initially have about 10-20 users, but could be scaled up to 200-250 concurrent users.

I am not really worried about disk space, just RAM and # of CPU's. I figure with RAM, the more the better, so I'd just max out what XP will allow.

  • I have not seen anything but we general start with 2 processors minimum for parrallel processing. Basically I would suggest doing you best guestimate with double the minimum required at the least and get it up. Then using Performance monitor monitor the major resources and create a baseline with noone on, then add your current users and baseline again. The between the two it will give you some idea for your needs how much growth may affect you and what to plan for.

  • Compaq has sizers for their servers. If you're not using Compaq, you'll get comparable answers.
