Should Production Databases Be in a VCS?

We don't put the database itself into VCS, just the app code that uses it.

Wow. That seems analog to washing and vacuuming a car, never changing the oil yet getting by thinking the car is properly maintained. Is this approach imposed on you by the org? Any plans to start managing the app code that happens to live in a database in the VCS too?

Sounds a harsh comparison but I essentially agree.

Not quite harsh enough. It's like not just never changing the oil in addition to never checking the coolant, never checking the brakes (neither brake fluid nor pads/discs), never checking the tyres/tires, never checking the indicators/turn lamps or the brake lights or the sidelights, not having any working dashboard instruments, and never checking that the windscreen wipers work.
