SharePoint SQL Database Maintenance Plans ?

  • I'm an accidental SS 2005 DBA, and somewhat new to SharePoint (MOSS 2007), both in my current environment. It is a very forgiving place with low transactional activity, and less than industrial strength DBA maintenance, disaster recovery etc.

I've read some SP lit online (e.g. Database Maintenance for MS SharePoint Products and Technologies, Bill Baer), and a few other MS and 3rd party white papers and articles as well.

Being new to both tasks, I thought I'd ask if any Forum readers here are versant, and have learned the hard knocks with administering SharePoint (07) from MSSQL side.

It is an open request for resources, your practices you've refined, etc. I'm particularly concerned as the directive from my Project Manager is to do Maintenance Plans and other performance monitoring on strictly the Content DB's created (from site collections) vs. all the SharePoint back-end DB's. (e.g. SharedServices_DB, SharedServices_Search_DB, SharedServicesContent, SharePoint_Config, etc.). Shouldn't I do standard maintenance (Backups Log/DB, Update Statistics, Index Reorg/Rebuilds) on these databases as well?

thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
