Setting up Microsoft SQL Linked Servers

  • Hello All,

I have been tasked with setting up Microsoft Linked SQL Servers. I have tried numerous times to get this to work to no avail. I am on my first SQL Server in SQL Server Management Studio and am trying to set up a new Linked Server.

So far this is what I have tried...

    1. Putting in the Linked Server Name in the "Linked Server Field"
    2. I have tried both SQL Server and Other data source for "Server Type" with putting in the IP Address of the other SQL Server instance on a Virtual Machine that is across the country.
    3. For security I have tried all the options for "For a login not defined in the list above, connections will:"
    4. I have also enabled TCP connections and Pipes in SQL Configuration Manager.

My test connection is failing every time.

Can anyone give me some advice on this issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • What is the error?  What is failing?

All the network connectivity is in place? Firewall rules between sites etc.

You can establish a SSMS session from the LocalServer to the RemoteServer?

What network troubleshooting have you done?  What server troubleshooting have you done?  What SQL troubleshooting have you done?
