SAC cannot find SQL2005 after upgrading from SQL2000

  • I have upgraded a default SQL2000 instance (SP4, HF2187) to SQL2005 (SP1 HF2153) on W2003 SP1.  When I try to start SAC to configure Features, I get the message 'one or more services for the Database Engine ... must be running'.

Has anyone else seen this behaviour after doing an in-place upgrade, and if so do you have a fix?  If there is no fix, then I can always use sp_configure instead of SAC.

  • TITLE: Surface Area Configuration

    ------------------------------

To configure the surface area, one or more services for the Database Engine or Analysis Services or Reporting Services must be running. (SQLSAC)

    ------------------------------

    BUTTONS:

    OK

    ------------------------------

Is this the error message you are talking about?

This screen shows the instances which are running. If there is no SQL Service running on this box, it doesnot make sense to show next screen. I am not sure what is the problem you are facing.

  • Balmukund,

I am getting the message you describe, but SQL 2005 is very definitely running on the box.  I can see the service in the Windows Services applet, and can connect to it using SQLMS.  The problem is that SAC does not recognise it.

  • Hi

Did you ever resolve this. I have just done exactly the same upgrade and SAC does not see the database but it is definitly running as users are connected to it!

    Thanks

  • No, the problem remains.  Feel free to raise it with Microsoft if you want.  IMHO SAC is one of the least reliable of the SQL 2005 tools, and I try to avoid it whenever possible.

  • Hi, is there any way of enabling email notifications without using the SAC?

  • You can do everything tha SAC does for SQL Server database services using sp_configure.  Check with BOL for the required syntax.
