Hi
I operate a SQL Server 2000 on Server 2003 and do daily backups as follows:
I select Database and overwrite existing media and create the backup file in a directory of the C drive. Pretty standard stuff and in accordance with Microsofts recommendations in MSDN.
I have a development environment at home and occasionally restore the production database for testing.
To restore I copy the production backup file to the same directory on my home computer as on the production machine.
I then select restore and it has always worked fine....until last week when I got a message:
The file on device C:/Backup/SQL_Backup is not a valid Microsoft Tape Format Backup Set. RESTORE TERMINATED.
I have rerun the backup on the production with verify and it is OK.
I have restored a backup from a week ago and it restores OK.
What should I do now ? Any ideas ?

Hi
Thanks for the reply
I had a look at the microsoft page but it refers to backup to tape.
My problem is not with backup and I am backing up to disk.
My problem is restoring the database onto another machine.
I have successfully restored this many, many times with no problems.
I backup to the C drive, copy to a USB flash disk, restore to exactly the same directory name on the development machine C drive and try to restore.
In the last week only I get the invalid format message. I have run verify when backing up and it is OK.
Any ideas ?

Do you have an error number? It's pretty much unclear why the word "tape" appears into the message body if you backup on disk and then copy the.bak file to the memory stick. I'm assuming you use sql enterprise mngr for backing up/restoring, not other 3rd party tool.

Hi
No error number other than ODBC SQLSTATE: 42000. Frustrating Eh !
I think the message refers to tape in the context that Microsoft seems to use a tape format for backup, whether it is tape or disk.
Yes, I use the SQL Server Enterprise Manager
Thanks
John
