restore database in to more secondary files

  • i have database of 3.4 tb. this comprises of 2 .5 tb and 1 tb data files. I have been assigned a new box where i need to restore this database in to two drives of 2 tb each. can you folks help me in doing this restore ?

  • Number options,

1 - Move 500GB worth of data from the 2.5TB file to the 1TB, then shrink the 2.5B file down to 2TB, so you end up with a 2TB and a 1.5TB file. Backup/copy/restore. Then rebuild all indexes in the database as shrinking files causes very bad fragmentation.

2 - Add a new file, move 500GB of data into that file from the 2.5TB file, shrink the file, backup/copy/restore, rebuild indexes

3 - Get your drives increased to include at least 1 2.5TB drive so you can restore the file into that drive.

  • Unless you move data from the larger data file to smaller data file before doing the backup and restore, you are going to need 3 TB of disk space for the larger data file. You can't move data around during the restore process.

  • thanks boss!! just checking for the available options
