    can a broken trigger say in the replicated database affect the live database at all?

    Not straight away and probably not for some time. Provided the logreader is running and collecting commands into the distribution db it will continue to run unaffected as transaction log backups will succeed (assuming full recovery model).

    so if for some reason the replication fails due to the trigger will that be all that fails?

    All transactional replication will cease to be delivered until the command that is erroring succeeds. SQL has to deliver commands exactly as they were performed transactionally on the publisher.
