We use a little (cheap) app called handy Backup http://www.handybackup.com which allows synchronisation, ftp and local backups. It's very easy to configure, but it doesn't allow SFTP yet, but perhaps in a future release who knows.

We use a program called Automate by unisyn to connect to ftp sites and pull files every hour 24/7. It is every easy to setup and schedule. The program Also let you script and schedule many other options including run SQL queries and Stored Procs at any schedule you want. We have used it for 7 years now and are very happy with it.
