Registering all sql instances in ssms

  • How do you register all servers on domain with different versions to admin thru ssms

  • I strongly recommend using Registered Servers with both Central Management Servers and Local Server Groups, a little used feature in SSMS that can be a huge boost to your organizing of servers.

Central Management Servers lets you create a shared resource/list of all servers that can be connected to via Windows Credentials; that list can then be used by all your developers, so they know they layout iof the environment, even if they cannot access it via their credentials!
if you have to connect via SQL credentials, and you also want to save the credentials used, you want to use Local Server Groups.

here's a pretty good article on it:

It's incredibly useful as Lowell said and he provided some great info for you.
If your concern is the version difference, use the highest version of SSMS. You can register instances on lower versions.
