Regarding Database Backup Size

  • Hi,

I take everyday Full and differential online database Backup file on sql server 2000 sp3. I saw the size of one database backup file is not increasing from last kindly suggest my whats the reason behind it your suggestion would be appereciated.

    regards

  • You mean that the full backup file is smaller than the previous day from time to time?

One likely cause is that you have less data than the previous day or that you are somehow using less datapages than the previous days (db reindex can do this).

  • The full backup will be backup of all the pages in the database and it need not be necessarily as the same size of the database it may be slightly smaller than size of the database.

Differential backup consists of pages that have changed after the full backup. and will be smaller in size than the full backup. If you say that its of same size then yor changes to database are similar and not too many changes.

You can read about Differential Change Map and Bulk Change Map in BOL to know more about how backups work.

  • Syed, You mean to say that you do a reindex and then backup the file and the size increases after that i does not. OK can you check if the backup that you have has been backing up corretly by doing a mock restoration and checking for changes.

  • Did you do a mock restoartion and check if the backup file is correct. If so why do you worry about the size of the database backup file.

  • Syed,

Your backup size will not increase if the overall data remains more or less the same. Can you throw some light on your backups, their sizes, schedules of full and diffs?
