Reboot or Restart on SQL server ?

  • Hi guys,

I understand that its always best where ever possible to physically go to the server/machine shut it down and turn it back on after 30 secs or so. As opposed to doing a restart via remote desktop..

Can anyone tell me what the main differences with regard to memory etc. are. if any..?

    thanks

  • 1.  IF you are at the machine you can see if it gets hung after any remote connections are severed

    2.  IF the machine doesn't come back up you are there and can physically power it down and back up

    3.  Doing it manually allows the drives to spin down and stop.  Not really an issue any more

    4.  The BEST reason....  GOD-LIKE powers muaahhahaa

Seriously though I don't think there are reasons with today's hardware that require physical intervention any longer except for 1 and 2.  Back 10 years ago hardware requirements were much different and needed the 30 second window
