Question on Server

  • Hi,

In another post I asked if we should upgrade our SQL Server from 2012 to 17 or 2019.

Thank to your advice we did decide to go to 2019. Now we what OS we should use.

Currently, our SQL server is on a basic Win10 system.  Here again, they are looking that if we put it on Win 10 Pro

they would save a lot of money.

Is there a real advantage to going to a server OS (like 2016 or 2019) as opposed to Win10 pro?

    Thank you

  • If you are using Windows 10 I'm guessing you are using a workstation computer and not a server computer. Both the hardware and OS of server are built to be running 24/7 then a workstation and Windows 10. Now windows 10 share lots of its code base with server 2019 so it shouldn't be bad. But the hardware is less built for running 24/7.

Windows Server has less overhead since it doesn't have all the client apps such as candy crush that can get installed on Windows Server. All those apps can be uninstalled though.

You cant install Enterprise edition on Windows 10.

If you know Linux you could use that instead Windows to lower the cost.

  • Thanks for the reply.

    That helps

    Thank you

  • You can install Standard or Express on Win 10. Not Enterprise.

Win 10 has some limits on connections and resource usage. Windows server is designed for lots of connections. If this is potentially an issue, go with WS2019. If you have just a few people connecting (or apps), then Win10 likely works.

  • Is this an upgrade or a migration? If it is a migration and cost is your limiting factor have you looked into installing SQL Server on Linux?
