Based on the title of the question, the answer is good. However, specifically for the text in the question (which explicitly limits the query type to backup and restore), I would prefer the answer "by adding WITH STATS to the backup or restore statement before you submit it"
For the progress indication in dm_exec_requests, beware that there are can be some caveats . I recently used it on a DBCC CHECKDB and found that this apparently has multiple phases and the percentage indicated appears to be for the current phase, not for the statement as a whole.
