Problems Restoring a 2005 DB to 2005 Server: Error 3241

  • Hi,

First post - if I haven't given enough detail please let me know.

    Situation:

Database Servers all running 2005: Local, Local Dev, Local Test, Prod Test and Prod Live.

Backing up from Prod Live to Prod Test works fine (moving files every which way across various networks which makes me think that we can rule out corrupted files).

However, backing up to Local, Local Dev or Local Test results in the following error.

    Msg 3241, Level 16, State 0, Line 2

The media family on device 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Backup\DB.bak' is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family.

    Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 2

    RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally.

I've searched google for things relating to this error and the most popular results are "Restoring a 2008 backup to 2005" or "Corrupted Files" which I don't beleive to be the issues here.

This was working just a couple of weeks ago.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks in advance,

    Michael

  • Turned out the file was "corrupt" in a sense. The production environments were running some software that compressed/decompressed a backup as and when BACKUP/RESTORE was called. This was added recently without us knowing by the server hosts.

Usefully though, this left the file extension as .bak

  • Hi,

I think I am having the same issue, could you tell me how exactly you resolved yours?

    Thanks,

    James
