Problems Installing SQL 2005 Developer

  • I was informed by a more experienced vd.net programmer that my sql 2005 install is incomplete. He said I had no SQL Management selection in Program Selection on my xp pro system. I uninstalled sql and reinstalled several times. Now my import/export selection does not work either. My sql 2005 is on a single cd/dvd yet I see some people refer to disk 2. When I uninstall sql 2005, it uninstalls from control panel add/remove software; however, when I try to reinstall, it says the components in the install already exist on my system. I spent 8 hours on this yesterday and got nowhere, maybe even backed up. Does anyone have any information for me? Like how does one totally uninstall sql 2005 so I can start all over with a clean registry.

  • The last time I heard about a problem like this was when someone had SQL Express installed on their system prior to trying to install a different version of SQL 2k5.

Does the CD / .msi file give you the opportunity to repair or remove the installation?

As far as multiple disks go, it depends on what you're installing. Is this an Auto-Play install or are you choosing a specific executable from Windows Explorer? If the later, what is the name of the executable (and the path) that you're choosing?

  • The media is bronze around the edge and says Microsoft SQL Server 2005. On the bottom of the label in bigger print it says Visual Studio 2005. It came with a package I bought on eBay of Visual Studio 2005. The pack was sealed and all the cd's are genuine Microsoft I am pretty sure. The visual studio part is working fine. When I put the cd in the drive, a menu comes up that asks me if I want to install the 64-bit version or the x86 version which is 32-bit I think. It is a long install process. When I reinstall, sometimes it asks me for the product key but most times it does not. There is no separate menu selection for Express nor does an Express version show up in Control Panel. I hope this helps. Thanks for replying. Shouldn't the uninstall totall remove things from the registry?

  • I don't know if this is important or not. When I execute the sql 2005 configuration program selection, it says sql is running; however, there is no icon in the launch tray in the bottom right of the screen. There used to be one until I uninstalled the product the first time.

  • Ahha! That's your problem. @=)

The install of Visual Studio 2005 comes with SQL Server Express which doesn't have a lot of the tools you'd expect. For instance, I believe Management Studio is not available with SQL Express.

Check out this link (I copied the page2 link which has a link to the Express management tool) for more details:

  • BTW, you might want to mention to the guy who told you SQL was installed wrong that you aren't installing SQL Server Developer. You're installing Visual Studio and it's accompanying SQL Express.

If he had known that before he told you it was installed wrong, he probably wouldn't have given you the advice he did.

  • Well, I tried something and I think I know what is happening. I took the same sql 2005 dvd (3 gb are on it) and installed it on another desktop machine that does not have vb.net visual studio. In fact, it also does not have vb6. I installed the sql 2005 software and everything is perfect. I have the management studio and all the trimmings. I have read several articles that say if sql express is installed first, then parts of sql 2005 do not load. I tried their workarounds but nothing changed. I guess SQL Express was installed when Visual Studio 2005 was installed.

Now my question is that should I uninstall both Visual Studio 2005 and SQL 2005, then install SQL 2005 again and see if I get all the components? then, install visual Studio 2005 last.

  • Visual Studio should always be installed BEFORE SQL Server or you'll mess up the install. We had major problems at my workplace when we did it reversed.

On the other hand, I don't remember SQL Express installing when we installed our Visual Studio's, but we installed SQL Developer right afterwards too, so I might have missed something.

If you're trying to install a full version of SQL (instead of relying on the Express), I'd advise uninstalling VS and starting over. VS first, SS second. See how that goes. And let us know if you're still having problems.
