Problem connecting to MS SQL Server 7 on an old WinNT machine

  • I have just installed SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition on a Windows 2K SP4 machine.

My first job is to copy the database from the old MS SQL Server 7 machine on the same network.

I noted that from SQL 7 Enterprise Manager I was not able to connect to the 2005 database. It wanted Server Mgmt Studio. Fine.

From the 2005 machine I cannot connect to the 7 machine. Not fine.

On the 2005 machine, SQL Server Configuration Manager -> SQL Native Client Config -> Alias shows OLDMACHINE.

In SQL Server Management Studio -> Object Explorer -> Connect -> Database Engine -> Server Name -> Browse for more -> Network Servers -> Database Engine it only lists the NEWMACHINE not the OLDMACHINE.

Any ideas what would cause that?

Network connection seems OK. They can ping each other.

    Thanks

  • Problem 1 solved.

From 2005 I can talk to the version 7 server.

    Problem 2.

Error Message. Cannot connect to OLDMACHINE.

This version of MS SQL Server Mgmt Studio can only be used to connect to SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2005 servers.

    Hmmmm.

    7 cant connect to 2005

    2005 cant connect to 7.

How can I get at least the Table structure out of 7 and into 2005?

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Archie
