We just set up a new server with SQL Server 2008R2 on Windows Server 2008 as a new DBA server. Our OPs team is asking me which ports are used to connect to the remote servers so that they can configure the firewall/switch properly (cannot ping some servers right now that I need to). This article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/287932 says the default port for SQL Server is 1433, which I knew, but not understanding if linking will treat it as a client I need to know if I have to have a larger range (1024-5000) opened. I'm not a network guru at this point and want to respond properly.
So, I guess the question is... Which port(s) do I tell him I am using to connect to the remote servers.
Thanks,
Jared

By default linked servers also use port 1433.
