Polling from Enterprise Manager - Authentication

  • Does EM attempt a network authentication for any registered server for polling, even if the user does not connect to the server?

The reason for this question is that a SQL Server at another location is showing authentication errors in the NT event log from workstations that have this server registered. There were no other connections to this server, and the error was listed only from workstations that have this server registered in EM.

Error Text: The logon to account: SQLAdmin

    by: MICROSOFT_AUTHENTICATION_PACKAGE_V1_0

    from workstation: CINSQL02

failed. The error code was: 3221225572

The version is SQL 2000 SP2.

Thank you for any advice or assistance.

  • I believe it connects to the IPC$ share or to port 445 to poll the server and see if it is running. Not sure if this would result in an auth failure if the EM registratoin wasn't correct.
