Permissions for Jobs

  • How can I grant our summer intern access to Agent Jobs in Enterprise Manager (SQL2000) without making him a member of sysadmin? That would give him too many permissions on other things. I don't see this addressed in BOL.

  • The 'TargetServersrole' role in the msdb database gives access to control certain jobs. This may be what you are after

  • Thanks very much, I see that, and added him to that msdb role, and now the Jobs show up for him in Enterprise Manager. I appreciate your help.

When I search on Targetserversrole in BOL or MS website, or google, I hardly get anything at all. But it may do the job.

  • TargetServersRole is kind of secretive. It's there to support Multi-server administration and thus wasn't explicitly intended for someone to use to monitor jobs, but it has the permissions necessary to do the job (pun intended). It's one of those cases where DBAs have found a piece and made it work for them.
