I logon to the SQL server 2012 as administrator (builtin admin acct), but unable to add or modify server role for any AD users, showing permission error 15151. Then I logon to the domain controller server, everything under user/computers looks normal to me.... and already made sure I got admin on my own AD user acct as well, not working neither as admin or myself.
Thanks in advance,

Do you have SysAdmin / SecurityAdmin role against your login or a group you are a member of on the SQL server?
Builtin Admins hasn't been a member of SysAdmin as default for a number of versions of SQL now, but can be added if you need it.

You are right, and admin doesn't get sysadmin by default... and I had to set the server to a single user mode, added a sysadmin with command line 🙁 finally able to go in as sysadmin. Thanks
