Performance of the SQLNCII.dll driver vs SQLSRV32.dll driver when connecting to a SQL Server 2005 DB

  • Does anyone have any experience with performance differences when connecting to a SQL Server 2005 DB using ODBC with the SQLSRV32.dll driver vs the SQLNCLI.dll driver?

I have recently upgraded our production server to SQL Server 2005 and users are complaining that their applications seem slower than normal. Their applications connect to the databases using ODBC datasources created with the SQLSRV32.dll driver.

I have created a new connection using the SQLNCLI.dll driver and it feels quicker to me, but this is such a subjective thing I was wondering if anyone has any definitive ideas ...

A serach of the internet hasn't been of much help, althought this one hit suggested a 20% performance gain for ODBC: http://my.safaribooksonline.com/9780735621985/ch09lev1sec2

    Is this reasonable?

Any thoughts / comments would be appreciated

    Julian
