Can anyone provide information on the performance difference between using a remote versus a local distributor. We have a server now which does a lot of publishing, using a local distributor, and are considering moving the distributor onto another server. What kind of performance boost could we expect? Any recommendations on how the distribution server should be configured - RAM, disks, processor, etc ? Any help will be appreciated

The information is...
it depends.
Sorry, hate to say it, but the distributor takes a load of writing transactions to a file and then sending them to subscribers. Is that a lot? No way to give you a generalization. It depends on the number of publications (and size) along with number of changes in a period of time along with the number of subscribers (can't remove until all subscribers have a transaction). If you're moving a few tables it might be an un-noticeable load. If you're trying to move a whole database, you might need a separate distributor.
