I have recently inherited some new customers and the SQL Server installed in their box is lagging behind in patches. It currently has Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (SP1) - 10.50.2500.0 (X64)and in my organization the latest patch we have for SQL Server 2008R2 is Security Patch MS15-058 (10.50.6529) which comes after Service Pack 3 (SP3) (10.50.6000).
Now my question is; is it safe to go from SP1 to SP3 without installing perhaps a cumulative patch?

basically, yes. Install SP3 followed by the GDR version of MS15-058, to go to version 10.50.6220
