Newbie needs failolver advice

  • We need a failover solution for a sql server with multiple instances. I have demo-ed

"DoubleTake" and I know that Microosft has basic (?) cluster technology suport but I

have no experience in these areas.

What product(s)/approaches would you recommend? We want a failover system that works but is not so complicated that

we are unable to use it when the real thing comes along.

  • SQL Server 2000 is a cluster-aware application if you want to use Windows 2000 Advanced Server and cluster it. We do that for several Active/Active clusters where I work. Brian Knight has written several articles on clustering and if I had a question in this regard I'd send it his way. You might take a look at his list of his articles, he's got a few on clustering that may help.

A question I will ask is are you looking for a failover solution in one location of a failover separate by some distance?

  • Brian,

Initially I am looking for a failover solution in one location. The "some distance" solution comes later!

  • Then your best bet is probably clustering using Windows 2000 Advanced Server.
