New to SQL, have a version question

  • OK... forgive the newbie here and bear with my butchering of the terminology and otherwise lack of PC lingo! How's that for an intro?!

A co-worker and I are in need of some of your knowledge about the different versions of MS SQL Server 2000. We know it comes in Standard Edition, and the Enterprise Edition. I just got done with a class using the Enterprise Edition and can't find anything the just tells us if Standard Edition comes with the Query Analyzer and/or the Enterprise Manager. Needless to say there is a substantial cost difference and if standard edition has both in it, then our business case for the purchase is that much easier to make. I appreciate any of your help! Take it easy on the new guy with the funny questions!

  • Hey, the intro was great

Both editions come along with Query Analyzer and Enterprise Manager. There are other differences between both versions.

Take a look here http://www.sqlservercentral.com/forum/link.asp?TOPIC_ID=18417 , http://www.sqlservercentral.com/forum/link.asp?TOPIC_ID=18275 or in BOL for 'Maximum Capacity Specifications'.

Dont' make the same mistake as our IT management did. We have both editions here. However, they decided to install Standard Edition on the production servers, because of the cost), put 3GB of RAM into that box, and asked me why the server was not taking advantage of the full RAM and why performance was not like expected.
