Network service vs. local system account auth. for services

  • After imaging Veritas on a few servers, then changing the server name i have had a hell of a time getting sql servers to start after the name change. The reason i am interested in this is that we currently are installing SQL Express 2005 using the Network Service for authentication for the services. The Veritas MSSQL service uses the Local System account for authentication, will using the Network Service for authentication give me the same problem?

  • Ok, well, i see there are some steps after renaming a sql server, so here is the real question.........Do you have to take the same steps in SQL 2005 express or standard edition as you do in 2000 after renaming a server. For example sp_dropserver 'old server name' sp_addserver 'new server name', 'local'....is this still needed? Sorry for any confusion found this after i posted.

  • The engine is basically the same, so yes, you should. Although that doesn't have an effect on authentication or the SQL Server service starting. Is that the service you're having a hard time with or is it a Veritas related service?

  • After i rename a server, i open up Veritas and it tries to use the login account that you assign when installing it and the MSSQL service authentication box comes up and wants a user name and password and no matter what one i use(d) or new one i create that service will not allow me to login to veritas.  I usually have to manually remove Veritas and delete all the registry keys then reinstall, so i basically took it off the image.  Veritas services do not start, well not all of them, i would not think it was sql if that authentication box did not pop up and give me so many issues.  Leaving Veritas off an image is fine, but being able to load SQL Express and Standard 2005 would be helpful even if i had to run a few commands after onsite techs rename the servers.

    Thanks

Edit: I can get a screen shot of the authentication box that pops up if it would help to determine if it was sql or not.
