We attempted to install SP4 on SQL server 2005.
We have noticed that one component appears to have been installed however the "other" component still requires upgrade.
Please can you advise if the installed component will need to be uninstalled and then reapplied as part of the new attempt, or if we can simply de-select this component?
Also, this is a two node Active/Passive cluster.
please can you provide detailed work instructions for this upgrade.

What could be the reason and how to overcome this issue?

sounds like you are trying to install post SP4 security patch MS12-070(version 5234) without first applying SP4 itself (version 5000)
go back and apply SP4 first.
BTW, unless you have reporting services running on this server MS12-070 is not required.
