Named or Default Instance

  • Hi good people,

    I am a new baby in SQL server but i love it am enjoying it every day now am expected to install SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008 on a new machine so am a bit confused if i should go for a default instance or named instance

    Can anyone please advise.

    Thanks and Regards

    Miranda.

  • Hi Miranda,

    Good to hear your enjoying your SQL server experience 🙂

    You can have 1 default instance, but multiple named instances on a single machine and you should install the oldest version 1st which gives you a couple of options;

    1. Install 1 2k5 default instance & 1 2k8 named instance

    2. Install 1 2k5 named instance & 1 2k8 named instance

    It's also worth thinking about setting the min & max memory settings to ensure 1 instance doesn't take all the memory.

    Cheers
