Named Instances On a Cluster

  • I am planning on putting different instances of SQL2K on a cluster for a few big databases in hope of isolating the environments. I wonder if any of you see any potential problems. Thank you for the input.

  • Has anybody done this? Any input would be appreciated. Thank You!

  • Make sure that you don't over-allocate memory, so set your min-max SQL Server memory settings accordingly for each instance.

Personally, I don't see much benefit from using several instances on the same server, except perhaps for security reasons. On the performance side, isn't it better to have one instance use all the resources available, instead of having two (or more) fight for resources?

  • Thank you, JM. We are just trying to isolate the production environment. I am just concerned that installing another cluster virtual server on the existing production cluster would interfere the existing environment.
